Life Moves Fast

I wanted to use my film theory final as a way for me to give some sort of closure to my college experience. I tried to use Zorns Lemma and Hollis Frampton as a model of how to construct my piece. I thought this would be an effective way to organize my work because it would require me to create rules and give some sense of order to a subject that is really chaotic and jumbled.

When I brainstormed what images I wanted to use, I decided that I would shoot images from the two different but equally important experiences I’ve had at Vanderbilt. The first is the walk between main campus and the Commons, which I do multiple times a day. It’s one of the only constants in my life here, and since I come from California, most of my memories of the changing season come from this walk. The second is the route I take when I go running, which I do to de-stress from dorm life. I go over by Belmont, and it’s really enjoyable part of my day because I see another part of Nashville.

In terms of rules, I separated the movie into seven sections. The first six are ten shots each, and the shots are progressively shorter in duration. As they get faster and faster, it gets more chaotic. For me this was symbolic of how college has been. I decided not to really actors or my friends in this because I feel like this was more of a personal reflection, and I honestly feel like college is kind of a lonely place. I also repeated the entire sequence to show how cyclical and routine my days here can seem.
